Mailing Lists (Mailman)
Run a discussion group or announcement list on your own domain with Mailman. A single message to the list address reaches every subscriber, and members can join or leave on their own.
What Mailman Is
Mailman is the mailing-list manager built into cPanel. Each list has its own address, such as [email protected]. Anything sent to that address is distributed to every subscriber, and Mailman handles subscriptions, unsubscriptions, and message archiving for you.
Creating a List
- Log into cPanel and scroll to the Email section.
- Click Mailing Lists.
- Enter a name in the List Name field — this becomes the part before the @, giving you
[email protected]. - Select the Domain the list belongs to.
- Set an administrator Password and confirm it. You will need this to manage the list later.
- Choose whether the list is Public or Private.
- Click Add Mailing List.
Public vs Private Lists
- Public — The list appears in Mailman’s public index and anyone can view the archive and request to subscribe.
- Private — The list is hidden from the public index and the archive is restricted to members. Best for internal or membership lists.
Managing the List in Mailman
- In cPanel, open Mailing Lists and find your list in the Current Lists table.
- Click Manage next to the list to open the Mailman administrative interface.
- Enter the administrator password you set when creating the list.
- Use the category links (General Options, Membership Management, Privacy Options, and more) to configure the list.
Adding and Removing Subscribers
- In the Mailman admin interface, open Membership Management.
- Choose Mass Subscription to add addresses — enter one email per line.
- Choose Mass Removal to unsubscribe addresses in bulk.
- Use Membership List to search for and edit individual members.
Moderation and Message Approval
Under Privacy Options » Sender Filters you can require that messages be approved before they go out:
- Set new members to moderated so their first posts need approval.
- Held messages appear under Tend to pending moderator requests, where you can Approve, Reject, or Discard each one.
Moderation is a good way to keep an announcement-only list free of off-topic replies.
